Postdoctoral Research Fellow : Lleida, Spain
Molecular mechanisms of SUMO-dependent sister chromatid cohesion

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team in the laboratory of Dr. Jordi Torres-Rosell at the IRBLLEIDABiomedical Research Institute – University of Lleida. Our research focuses on the regulation of SMC complexes during genome replication and segregation.

The following position is available initially for 18 months starting in spring 2015. The postdoctoral positions will be funded by an Explora Ciencia MINECO grant, but the candidate is also encouraged to apply for independent postdoctoral funding.

Research Summary:

One of the most important complexes for chromosome architecture and dynamics is cohesin, a ring-shaped complex that topologically links sister chromatids. Its ability to entrap chromatin fibers inside its ring structure is not only required for chromosome segregation, but also for the repair of DNA damage and most probably for the regulation of gene expression during development. Not surprisingly, it is classified as a cancer gene, and its mutation can cause developmental disorders known as cohesinopathies. Despite its wide relevance in chromosome biology, we still do not understand how cohesin rings join chromatin fibers. The main model proposed so far is one based on the threading of replication forks through cohesin rings, a mechanism that would passively link replicated sisters. However, this mechanism does not account for situations where cohesion can be established in the absence of replication forks, such as in response toDNA damage. Moreover, cohesin might also regulate gene expression in non-replicating cells, most probably through entrapment of chromatin fibers to stabilize loops.

We plan to use cellular and biochemical approaches to understand how chromatin fibers are selected for entrapment inside cohesin rings. The successful candidate will be in charge to test a new and simple yet radical model for cohesion establishment. Prior experience with molecular biology, microscopy and yeast genetics is desirable. Experience in cell cycle and chromosome biology would be advantageous.

Principal duties:

- Carry out laboratory-based research to the highest standard.
- Contribute intellectually and strategically to the development of the project.
- Present information and data to members of the lab and participate in discussions.
- Coordinate and communicate with collaborators and other teams.
- Supervision and training of students in techniques and use of equipment.
- Writing up grants and research work for publication

Desired skills and experience

- To hold a PhD at the time of application.
- Experience in the fields of cell cycle and yeast as a model organism.
- To have an good publication track record with a strong background in cell and molecular biology.
- Strong English language skills.
