There is also the possibility of a master's thesis, which can then be continued in the form of a doctoral thesis!

Our group is mainly concerned with the molecular mechanisms that lead to human tumor cells for the generation of chromosomal aberrations during mitosis. This so-called chromosomal instability is the basis of high grade aneuploidy, which can directly contribute to tumorigenesis, tumor progression and therapy resistance. We examine first, the molecular mechanisms that lead to chromosome aberrations in mitosis and to the other, the cellular consequences of the emerging understanding aneuploidy in human tumor cells.

Our work in the context of the DFG-funded Clinical Research Group 179 (KFO179), the DFG-funded research group 742 (FOR742) and funded under the Heisenberg program of the DFG excellence. In these projects, we characterize the function of mitotic oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes that regulate mitosis directly.

Another overview of our research interests is our homepage: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/216801.html and our latest publications, including the in Nature Cell Biology (Stolz et al., 2010) are published (Pdfs be sent gladly on request).

The suitable candidate for a PhD position should be an excellent master's degree in molecular medicine, human biology, biology, biochemistry, etc. exhibit. For candidates who want to first make a master thesis with us, a very good bachelor's degree is required.
Particularly important is for us a very high level of motivation and above all fun to innovative and internationally competitive biomedical research.
Optimal care and efficient work is given in just new and state-of-the-art equipped laboratories.

Methods: cell biological methods, based on human cell culture systems, FACS-based cell cycle analysis, microscopy (eg Deconvolutionsmikroskopie, live-cell microscopy), molecular biological methods, transfection, retroviral infection, siRNA / shRNA, genome-wide siRNA screens, etc.

An application for the Göttingen Graduate School "Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB; www.ggnb.uni-goettingen.de), which is funded under the Excellence Initiative, is possible. This graduate school is one of the largest in Germany and provides an excellent basis for the PhD studies. For more information on the GGNB homepage.

We ask you to send the complete application including CV, references and a brief description of previous research experience, indicating the two references, preferably by email:
Holger Bastian, Email: holger.bastians @ uni-goettingen.de
