For the DFG Research Training Group Genes, Environment and Inflammation project 5 “Epigenetic marks of a stable host-microbiota association in the mammalian gut” at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel and the University of Lübeck

we are inviting applications from excellent molecular biologists (Master and “Diplom” graduates) from the field of biology, biochemistry, biotechnology  and related topics  for 1 doctoral student position starting as soon as possible, for a fixed term of three years.

The DFG Research Training Group Genes, Environment and Inflammation is involved in cutting-edge research of the environmental impact on pathophysiological processes of complex chronic inflammatory diseases. The position is localized at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology in the group of Philip Rosenstiel.

The selected student will build a genome-wide map of the dynamic epigenetic marks (DNA methylation, selected histone marks) induced by host-microbe association using next-generation sequencing. She or he will further assess the stability of selected marks during experimental dysbiosis events (cf. Gut, 2011, Genome Research 2012, Nature 2012). Finally, the student will address the functional relevance of epigenetic events on the development of the murine intestinal microflora using cellular and molecular methodologies. Students with excellent computational skills from adjacent fields (e.g. mathematics, informatics) and a strong interest in biology are encouraged to apply.

As a doctoral student of the DFG Research Training Group, you will be integrated into the Cluster of Excellence Inflammation at Interfaces. You will work in close cooperation with scientists and clinicians of various institutes at both Kiel and Lübeck Universities and find an exceptional research infrastructure that allows the latest state-of-the-art research; the Training Group is embedded into the new technology center ZMB (http://www.zmb.uni-kiel.de/) that hosts several high-throughput platforms including Next Generation Sequencing and High Performance Computing. The excellent networking between institutes, clinicians, scientists will open up new vistas for your PhD research.

The surroundings of Kiel - located directly at the Baltic Sea – offer a bundle of opportunities for water sports and other recreational activities after intense research.

Participation in scientific meetings and retreats, research visits abroad, soft skill courses and tutorials, will complement your PhD training at the DFG Research Training Group. The salary for each position will be 65% of a full position on TV-L 13.

To apply, please email your application (motivation letter, CV, academic certificates) with contact details of two academic referees to e.zell@ikmb.uni-kiel.de. Women are explicitly invited to apply. Handicapped applicants will be considered with preference in case of equal qualification.
