Ph.D. position available at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology: Control of meiotic DNA break formation

The group of Gerben Vader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is looking for motivated and enthusiastic Ph.D. students to join the lab. We use the budding yeast Saccaromyces cerevisiae to study how cells maintain genomic stability during meiosis, the specialized cell division that is essential for sexual reproduction. We are particularly interested in the control of meiotic DNA break formation. Meiotic DNA break formation is not only a driving force of genetic variation and evolution; it is also essential to allow for proper development of reproductive cells. Nonetheless, the incorrect formation and repair of meiotic DNA breaks can also trigger genome destabilization. We want to understand how organisms ensure that the process of DNA break formation is controlled in a proper manner. To study these processes we use genome-wide analysis of DNA break formation coupled with molecular cell biology and biochemistry.

The successful candidate has affinity with basic molecular biological methods. Previous experience in yeast genetics, bioinformatics and/or cell biology is not considered essential, but would be preferred. The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology is a vibrant, international research community of which the successful candidate is expected to become an actively participating member.
