PhD in Nanotechnology : Ilmenau, Germany

The appointment is given for 3 years at a time. Compensation is based on the provisions of the collective agreements in the public sector in the German Federal States (TV-L), rank will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience up to pay scale E 13, a 50% appointment is offered during the first year.

The successful candidates will be responsible for (1) Research, Development, and Applications of a Recently Discovered 3D Nanostructure Deposition Method or (2) The localized collection of airborne analytes and pathogenics or (3) Self-organized assembly of semiconductor devices.

Applicant 1 (ref # 05/17) will start research in a project that is motivated by preliminary results. Funding to study the aspects has been received from the DFG. The main goal of the project is to gain fundamental understanding and control of the discovered process which is an atmospheric pressure gas phase deposition method. The process is substantially different from current vacuum and vapor phase deposition methods. From a technological point of view it has the potential to enable the production of nanostructured deposits beyond what is currently possible. Specifically, we believe that it is possible to enable the production of arbitrary 3D (instead of 2D) and heterogeneous multimaterial composite nanostructured deposits (instead of homogenous and unimaterial/function) with high resolution (~10 nm). The process, as it is understood so far is based on the interplay between high mobility gas ions, lower mobility charged nanoparticles/molecules, and a patterned programmable substrate which supports filamentation of the material flux and growth pattern. We would like to gain understanding of the underlying mechanism.

Applicant 2 (ref # 04/17) will work at the cross-section of Aerosol science and the collection and detection of airborne particles. The research will investigate a new transport approach, which supports the localized collection of airborne particles at a higher rate than previously possible. Specifically, in a preliminary study, we have discovered a collection mechanism that allows the localized collection of airborne particles at high rates. Strongly simplified the process is an electrodynamic Coulomb force directed transport process. The mechanism, as far as it is understood, is based on the interplay between high mobility gas ions with airborne particles, a patterned substrate, and a carrier gas. The process leads to localized collection of airborne particles on a pre-patterned substrate. The process is applicable to a wide range of particle sizes and types.

Both approaches involve installation and research of modular systems that integrate nanomaterial synthesis, nanomaterial transport, and programmable selected area multimaterial deposition in one apparatus. The applicants should mention in his/her application if he/she has experience with nanomaterial synthesis, nanomaterial transport, localized growth, pathogenics, nanobiomaterials, or the installation of gas phase deposition methods.

The long-term goal is the realization of a scalable deposition process, which will allow the production of novel nanostructured materials on a surface and the fast collection of airborne analytes. During the duration of the project it is essential that the candidates demonstrate the applicability of the method. Potential applications are in the areas of nanostructured absorber materials, 3D electrode structures, super-capacitors, nanobiotechnology, process technology, or sensors. Please indicate in your application if you have experience in one of these areas.

Applicant 3 (ref # 06/17) will be responsible for research in the field of mounting electronic components made of silicon and III / V semiconductors. The physical principle of positioning and electrical connection are based on novel surface tension-based self-assembly principles and transfer techniques. The tasks involve independent scientific research work in the field of (1) Self-organized assembly of semiconductor devices and (2) transfer-based assembly of semiconductor devices. The Project involves research in the field of integration of components on stretchable substrates related to biomedical applications. The research includes:

• Planning, implementation and evaluation of experimental work
• The design and implementation of the necessary physical setups and its transfer to a prototype machine and development of a process for industrial use.
• Proof of applicability which is initially specified by the third-party project.

Setting requirements are a scientific university degree (Diploma / Master) in chemistry, physics, materials science, electrical engineering or comparable. Technische Universität Ilmenau has been awarded the Total E-Quality-predicate. It strongly urges women to apply. Disabled persons, having the same aptitude and professional qualifications, have priority in hiring.

Selection Process: As an applicant you should show in the motivation letter that you are qualified and driven to advance this project. To do this your application should provide answers to the following questions: 1. What is the research focus? 2. What technological methods are used? Do you have experience in semiconductor technology, or aerosol science, or plasma physics, or gas-discharge processes, or applications of 3D nanostructures? How would you advance the project? What are your Ideas?
Applications with the usual documents (letter of application, complete curriculum vitae, certificates, possibly references) should be sent by March 31 2017 indicating the reference number to:

merten.birgit@tu-ilmenau.de

For more technical information please contact Prof. Heiko O. Jacobs (heiko.jacobs@tu-ilmenau.de , tel +49 3677 69 3723). In addition to physically mailed paper copies (the standard process) it would be appreciated if you could send a second electronic version to Prof. Jacobs at hojacobsjob@gmail.com.

Please submit the application documents as copies only or in electronic form to reduce expenses. Paper copies will be shredded after the selection process. If the candidate wants his/her documents back, a self-addressed stamped envelope needs to be included in the package. Ilmenau Technical University will not cover the expenses generated by the application.
