Doctoral candidate in the field of RAS cancer drug development (M/F) : Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg

The University of Luxembourg is a multilingual, international research University.
The University of Luxembourg has the following vacancy in its newly established Cancer Cell Biology Group (Prof. Dr. Daniel Abankwa) at the Life Sciences Research Unit, which belongs to the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication:

Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in the field of RAS cancer drug development (M/F)

The PhD student will work in the Cancer Cell Biology group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Daniel Abankwa, who recently relocated from Finland. The student can be associated with the doctoral programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine.
The Cancer Cell Biology group focuses on the most notorious oncogene RAS. Basically all cancers display misregulated RAS signaling. Our mission is to eRASe cancer (eRASeCancer.wordpress.com). We are particularly interested in:
• understanding molecular-mechanistically how specific RAS signaling complexes drive cancer.
• identifying Ras-associated target proteins for drug discovery.
• developing drugs that block Ras-driven tumorigenic processes.
This project specifically builds on Najumudeen AK et al. Oncogene 2016 PubMed ID: 26973241, where we show that K-ras driven cancer cell stemness is sensitive to inhibitors of calmodulin in tumor cells with certain gene expression signatures.
We will employ a broad spectrum of techniques, including molecular cell biology, with application of quantitative fluorescence methods (including FRET and confocal microscopy), high-throughput chemo-genetics approaches and in vivo models. We collaborate with several international research groups, as well as pharma/biotech companies in Europe.

Activities

• Conduct self-driven experimental research in the area of RAS cancer drug development

• Participation in the vibrant doctoral programme, preparation of thesis and research articles
• Opportunity to contribute to teaching

Profile

• Outstanding candidates with MSc related to life sciences (e.g. biochemistry, biophysics, molecular systemsbio)
• Experience with cell culture, DNA and protein methods is desirable
• Curiosity, attention to detail, persistence and good organizational skills
• Excellent command of spoken and written English

Offer

• Solid scientific training as a research professional in translational cancer research
• International, state-of-the-art research environment on the brand new Belval campus
**

Candidates should submit the following documents:

• Motivation letter (max. 1 page)
• Succinct Curriculum Vitae, highlighting any outstanding achievements
• List of publications or manuscripts in preparation (if applicable)
• Copies of diplomas

Next to your overall motivation the motivation letter needs to contain: 1) Explanation of your overall self-assessment of academic achievements, e.g. top 10-20% in the country; 2) Expression of your theoretical strengths in chemistry, molecular biology and cell biology (short); 3) List of experimental skills acquired in internships or degree projects.
