Position Summary
Faculty Positions in Neuroscience
Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute
The Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) (http://research.vtc.vt.edu) is recruiting several faculty in cellular and molecular neurobiology at the assistant professor level. The faculty will be recruited into two new centers (http://research.vtc.vt.edu/centers/) within the institute – the Developmental and Translational Neurobiology Center and the Glial Biology in Health, Disease, and Cancer Center. The faculty members will have tenure track appointments in an appropriate department and college at Virginia Tech.
The VTCRI Developmental and Translational Neurobiology Center: Successful applicants should have established or have the potential for establishing an innovative research program that has received or is likely to receive extramural funding. One position is for a neurobiologist studying mechanisms underlying brain development and the other is for a neurobiologist or neuro-immunologist studying aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and/or brain injury. The VTCRI Glial Biology in Health, Disease, and Cancer Center: Successful applicants should have established or have the potential for establishing an innovative research program in glial biology that has received or is likely to receive extramural funding. Areas of particular interest include glial-neuronal and glia-vascular interactions, role of glia in brain development, synaptogenesis, myelination and/or the role of glia in disease. Questions regarding these positions should be directed to Dr. Harald Sontheimer (sontheimer@vt.edu), co-chair of the search committee and director of the Center or to Dr. Michael Friedlander (friedlan@vtc.vt.edu), co-chair of the search committee and executive director of the VTCRI.
Applicants for all positions should have an earned doctorate, postdoctoral training and a demonstrated record of research productivity. The new faculty members will join a highly collaborative and successful group of investigators at the VTCRI and will be required to establish and maintain high-quality, extramurally funded research programs and participate in teaching/mentoring of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. Salary, space, and start-up packages are competitive.
The VTCRI and the VTC School of Medicine represent a successful public-private partnership between the Commonwealth of Virginia's leading research -intensive university – Virginia Tech – and a major health care system – Carilion Clinic, in Roanoke, VA. The research institute and medical school are located in the picturesque Roanoke Valley midway between Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC. The VTCRI currently houses 26 independent research groups with over 300 research and support team members. Prospective faculty members can draw from an outstanding and diverse pool of graduate students to work with them in their research program. Specifically, Virginia Tech has over 6,000 graduate students and offers graduate programs in biomedically-related disciplines, including the Translational Biology, Medicine, and Heath (TBMH) Ph.D. program that has a major track and focus area in neuroscience (http://www.tbmh.vt.edu).
