Postdoctoral Fellow – ApoE lipidation in Alzheimer: Heidelberg

Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

We are recruiting a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to study the mechanisms of lipidation of Apolipoprotein E variants in the context of Alzheimer disease. The project builds onto the development of new assays to measure protein-lipid interaction and complexes (Saliba et al., 2015, 2016; Maeda et al., 2014, 2013) and implies a scientific collaboration with a pharmaceutical company. The successful candidate will join the Anne-Claude Gavin group at the Structural and Computational Biology Unit at EMBL Heidelberg, but will closely collaborated with our pharma partner. EMBL is a leading international research organization with a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary atmosphere (see www.embl.de). The Gavin group applies systems biology approaches to study biological membranes, lipid metabolism and transport.

Qualifications and Experience

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding candidate with strong interest in the characterization of ApoE/lipid complexes using newly developed biochemical and microfluidic assays. The successful candidate holds a Ph.D. in biophysics, biochemistry or membrane biology. Previous experience in the purification and biochemical analysis of large macromolecular complexes and/or previous experience in lipid and membrane biochemistry would be an advantage. The position requires an outstanding motivation and commitment to conduct basic research in the area of lipid biology, the ability to work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary team and excellent technical, organizational and management skills. An initial contract of two years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on the circumstances.

Additional Information

Further details regarding work in the laboratory and details of the projects can be directly obtained from Anne-Claude Gavin (gavin[at]embl.de).   EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.
Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
