Postdoctoral position in Integrative Physiology and Proteomics: Copenhagen, Denmark

Tenure: Two years

Background

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (Metabolism Center) has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to conduct fundamental research on metabolism (http://metabol.ku.dk). It consists of five scientific sections and was established through an unrestricted grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The current position is in Section for Integrative Physiology headed by Prof. Juleen Zierath. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with Dr. Atul Deshmukh from the Clinical Proteomics group at the NNF Center for Protein Research (CPR), which is headed by Prof. Matthias Mann.

Project description

The overall aim is to study important processes in metabolic diseases such as glucose homeostasis and type 2 diabetes. The project involves the identification of targets by proteomics analysis and the validation of these targets in cellular and animal models of Type 2 diabetes. The candidate will apply various approaches in physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to validate novel and interesting targets identified in large-scale proteomic screens. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Atul Deshmukh from the Clinical Proteomics group. He or she will be embedded in Metabolism Center and work in a scientific environment that bridges several disciplines of proteomics and metabolic diseases.

Selection criteria

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology or related science.
  • Documented expertise in molecular and cellular biology, such as immunoblotting, CRISPR-based gene editing, qPCR, RNA-seq, cell metabolism.
  • Knowledge of mammalian physiology and metabolic diseases
  • Strong track record with publications in peer reviewed journals in relevant discipline.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence

Desirable candidate:

  • Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential but desirable.
  • Previous experience with animal work (FELASA certification).
  • Prior experience in microscopy and imaging technology
  • Previous experience with metabolic assays (glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation etc.)
  • Experience with measurement of mitochondrial respiration using Seahorse
  • Prior knowledge of handling large scale proteomics and genomics data and associated computing skills.

Relationships

The post holders will report to Dr. Atul Deshmukh and Prof Juleen Zierath.

Employment Conditions

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2013. The position will be at the level of postdoctoral fellow. The gross basic salary range for Postdoctoral Fellows is DKK 32,332 to DKK 34,061 per month (level 6 to 8).
