Who we are

At Roche, 82,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we’ve become one of the world’s leading research-focused healthcare groups. Our success is built on innovation, curiosity and diversity.
The headquarters in Basel is one of Roche’s largest sites, over 8,000 people from approximately 80 countries work at Roche Basel. Favored by its geographic location in the heart of Europe, the Basel area is one of the most dynamic economic regions in Switzerland — a great place to live and work.

The Position

As Scientist with strong background in neurodevelopmental diseases you are part of the CNS Discovery group in the Neuroscience Department at Roche Basel. Reporting to the head of Cellular Neurosciences you will supervise Research Associates, and work with Postdoctoral scientists and project teams. Our cross-functional team aims to better understand the biology of diseases related to synaptic dysfunction such as autism spectrum disorders. Our focus is on patient-derived pluripotent stem cells as cellular disease models in which we aim to discover novel therapeutic entry points. You will advance biomedical research by phenotyping cells from different genotypes using state-of-the-art genetic and molecular interrogations together with functional and cytochemical characterizations. In this position you will:

  • investigate neuronal and synaptic dysfunction at all levels in iPSC-derived neurons from genetically and clinically well-defined patients to gain a deeper understanding of disease pathology
  • develop, based on the gained know-how, disease-relevant cellular assays that can be used to monitor the effect of genetic or pharmacological manipulations at the molecular, cellular and network level
  • work closely with project teams in Roche’s discovery technology and Neuroscience group to translate such assays into high throughput screens with the ultimate goal of generating novel disease-modifying drugs
  • co-ordinate and lead internal and external collaborations in this field of research
  • participate in novel target discovery efforts, initiate and guide Postdoc projects, and support project teams in drug discovery experiments

Who you are

You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

You are a scientist with a PhD and a proven publication track record in neurodevelopmental biology. You have gained expertise for several years in running your own research project after your PhD, preferably in one of the major research groups working on synaptic physiology. You have a very broad skill base from genetics, molecular biology, histology and functional neurosciences to apply a variety of techniques to biological questions. You’re someone who likes to work in collaborative project teams, and are motivated by our common vision to innovate health care. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests with high level of scientific engagement. As the successful applicant you:

  • have gained profound know-how in cellular neurobiological models of neurodevelopmental diseases
  • are highly motivated to plan, run, analyze and present experiments applying molecular biology and genetic analysis to in vitro cellular models of disease
  • are familiar with imaging- and immunocytochemistry-based high content screening assays ideally of synaptic structures in neuronal cultures
  • have a robust background in functional phenotyping of cells using time-lapse imaging, electrophysiology or similar techniques
  • are enthusiastic to translate literature findings into robust and reproducible screening assays amenable to discover new drug candidates
  • are proactive and motivated to work effectively in diverse and cross-functional teams
  • are fluent in English, preferably also in one of the official Swiss languages
