A fully-funded, four-year PhD position is currently available in the Dunleavy Laboratory at the Centre for Chromosome Biology at NUI, Galway (www.chromosome.ie).

My laboratory studies fundamental cellular processes required for the correct transmission of genetic material during cell division cycles. Specifically, my research focuses on the regulation of centromeres, key regions of eukaryotic chromosomes where kinetochores assemble to ensure proper chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis. Surprisingly, centromere identity is not determined by DNA sequence, rather it is specified epigenetically by the presence of the centromere-specific histone variant CENP-A. During mitosis, errors in CENP-A assembly result in genome instability and aneuploidy, both hallmarks of cancer. Yet the roles and regulation of CENP-A assembly in meiosis, the specialised cell division cycle that results in the production of haploid gametes, are at present largely unknown.

In my laboratory, I use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model developmental system to investigate the function and regulation of CENP-A incorporation at centromeres during meiosis and gametogenesis. For more information see: http://www.chromosome.ie/researchers/dunleavy/

Using complementary biochemical and genetic approaches, this PhD project aims to identify novel factors, and elucidate mechanisms, required for CENP-A incorporation in sperm and eggs. The successful candidate should have strong interest in biochemistry, genetics, cell, molecular and developmental biology. Methodologies applied will include protein purifications, mass spectrometry, and live imaging of tissues using state-of-the-art microscopy techniques.

To apply please send your CV (including the names of two referees) and a one-page statement of why you wish to pursue a PhD in chromosome biology, which includes a brief description of any previous research experience. Applications should be received before July 31st 2013, with an anticipated start date of September 1st 2013.
