Project Description:
In spite of the major progress made in antiviral therapy of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection, there is currently no effective vaccine or therapy capable of eradicating virus or inducing a long lasting viral control after cessation of medication. Such developments are hindered by the limited understanding of protective immunity as well as by mechanisms that lead to ineffective responses in the large majority of HIV-infected individuals. My laboratory focuses on the regulation of HIV-specific immune responses, with an emphasis on HIV-specific T cell exhaustion and CD4 T cell plasticity. The goal of our research is to identify reversible mechanisms of HIV-specific T cell impairment and/or defective programming that can be manipulated to enhance antiviral functions. Such factors are not only important in AIDS pathogenesis, but also play a critical role in different settings of antigen persistence, such as other chronic infections and cancer.
Available: winter, spring or fall 2014
Deadline: 11/15/2013
