PhD Position in Viral Immunology

The Institute of Virology at the University Duisburg-Essen / University Hospital Essen is looking for a highly motivated candidate for a PhD program within the German-Chinese Transregio 60:

„Mutual Interaction of Chronic Viruses with Cells of the Immune System: From Fundamental Research to Immunotherapy and Vaccination“

The TRR60 is a Transregional Collaborative Research Centre between partners from Essen and Bochum (Germany) and from Wuhan and Shanghai (China). The central aim of the TRR60 is to gain fundamental understanding of the interaction between chronic viruses such as HBV, HCV and HIV and the host immune response. The open position is part of the HCV immunology group (headed by Joerg Timm). The research topic is the influence of HCV sequence diversity on the immune response with a specific focus on differences in host immune genetics between China and Germany. The project will include functional analysis of immune cells from patients exposed to HCV and viral sequence analyses supported by the Department of Bioinformatics. The candidate will have the opportunity to visit joined workshops in China.

The position will be associated with the Research Training Group 1949 (“Immune Response in Infectious Diseases – Regulation between Innate and Adaptive Immunity“). In the course of the newly established RTG excellent young academics from natural sciences or medicine will receive an outstanding education in the fields of Infectious Diseases and Immunity. The three-year structured program consists of lecture series, retreats, symposia, lab rotations and methods courses. Successful candidates will be awarded the PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.). The program is taught in English.

Requirements:
•excellent graduates in the fields of biology, medical biology, immunology, biotechnology (Master or equivalent)
•basic knowledge in viral immunology
•interest in participating actively in a German-Chinese research program
•very good written and spoken English skills

The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (TV-L E 13) with 65% of the regular working hours.
