Modeling of Neuroinflammation in sporadic Parkinsonâs Disease using human induced pluripotent Stem Cells (hIPSC) (Erlangen)

Parkinson’s disease is the most prevalent movement disorder worldwide. There is increasing evidence that in addition to protein aggregation, inflammatory processes have a modifying role on neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease. Our group has a longstanding interest in understanding the role of neuroinflammation and its modulation in neurodegeneration (Saijo, Winner et al., 2009; Glass et al., 2010).
This project will use human stem cell technology (induced pluripotent stem cell derived neural cells). The candidate will learn to culture human pluripotent stem cells and differentiate them into neurons and glial cells. Cell culture, live-cell imaging and molecular biology will be crucial techniques to understand neuroinflammation in Parkinson’s disease. In addition, transcriptomic and bioinformatic analyses will be used to identify mechanisms and candidate targets.

The project will be conducted in the context of ForIPS (Bavarian consortium of human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells) at the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical research under the supervision of Dr. Iryna Prots (Head: PD Dr. Beate Winner).

We are looking for highly motivated students with a Diploma/Master degree in Molecular Medicine or Biology. Candidates should have a strong background in Neurobiology, Cell Biology, Immunology or Molecular Biology. Since cell culture is a major part of this project, previous experience with this technique is necessary.

Starting date: April 1, 2014.

Applications should include a CV, 2 references, and a brief research statement.
