Post Doctoral Fellow – Role of stem cells in chronic lung disease : Cambridge, United Kingdom

PrintThe RIA research group in Cambridge UK is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the Respiratory, Autoimmunity and Inflammation department for 3 years to develop and lead an independent research project focused on the role of stem cells in chronic lung disease. The research will be conducted in MedImmune’s state-of-the-art laboratories and will help drive innovation that in the future will enable new drug discovery. The successful candidate will benefit from daily interaction with highly accomplished industrial and academic scientists (including other post-doctoral fellows) with whom they will collaborate. The position offers a unique opportunity for a talented scientist to work in a dynamic and innovative environment and to develop their career at the interface of basic research and drug discovery.

We have an opportunity for a talented Postdoctoral Fellow to join a highly motivated and basic science driven team within the Respiratory group at MedImmune, Cambridge UK. The successful candidate will focus their postdoctoral research on characterising the role of stem cells in chronic lung diseases such as IPF, COPDand severe asthma. Likely examples of the successful candidate’s contribution are leading independent research interpreted from experimental design in a variety of model systems including in vivo, in vitro, ex vivo and human patient sample analysis.
The successful candidate will be driven to develop scientifically through critical review of the literature, presentation at conferences and authoring or contributing to patent applications and manuscripts for publication.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to:
• Independently design, execute and interpret specific in vitro and/or ex vivo or in vivo pharmacology studies and conduct broader scientific research with limited supervision.
• Make decisions and execute plans, informed by their scientific knowledge and the high quality data that they generate.
• Innovatively apply technology to ensure scientific excellence and to maximise the value of the project.
• Maintain and further develop scientific expertise through critical review of the literature and active participation in the external scientific community through publication and presentation.

Your previous experience will clearly demonstrate:

• Good scientific knowledge of cellular mechanisms underlying stem cell biology/regenerative medicine
• Experience and knowledge of chronic lung diseases, ideally IPF, COPD and/or severe asthma, as well as innate and adaptive immunity will strengthen your application but are not mandatory
• Developing and running disease relevant in vivo, in vitro, or ex vivo, cell-based assays/systems relevant to the study of lung disease or stem cell/regenerative medicine.
• Ability to independently lead scientific research.
• Broad skill base in standard protocols to understand stem cell biology e.g. stem cell phenotyping by flow cytometry
• Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills, actively contribute to the scientific debate within RIA Research and effectively interact, and build collaborations, with colleagues across MedImmune.

Education: PhD in Immunology, Biochemistry or a closely related life science discipline

Experience:

• Ideally post-doctoral research. Demonstrated ability to conduct a high level research project.
• Must be highly motivated and capable of working independently as well as collaboratively within a team….
