Postdoctoral research fellow in adaptive immunity : Stockholm, Sweden

Postdoctoral research fellow in adaptive immunity
Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Solna, Experimental cardiovascular research unit

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The
department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Experimental cardiovascular research unit is a part of the Department of Medicine, Solna, and is
located at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM), Karolinska University Hospital, Solna.

Duties
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common systemic inflammatory autoimmune disorders, affecting approximately 1% of the worldwide population. Although a role of B lymphocytes and antibodies in RA is well established, the contributions of various pro- and anti-arthritic B cell subsets to the disease aetiology remains unknown, due to the absence of suitable experimental models. We have therefore created a unique resource of conditional knockout and transgenic lines that have defects in B cell subsets that will allow for a more thorough understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of B cell mediated disease mechanisms in RA. The ultimate goal is to provide a framework for the ontogeny of pathogenic and protective B cells in arthritis. In addition, using next-generation deep sequencing, we also hope to provide insight in the antibody repertoires that may contribute to the disease in conjunction with these mouse models.

This project will be supervised and performed in the laboratories of Stephen Malin, Göran Hansson and Rikard Holmdahl, who all have a long standing interest in the role of adaptive immunity in chronic
inflammatory diseases. (see Malin et al Nature Immunology 2010 Feb;11(2):171-9, Libby et al
Immunity. 2013 Jun 27;38(6):1092-104 and Nandakumar et al PNAS 2013 Jun 18;110(25):10252-7).

Entry requirements
The postdoctoral candidate should have documented experience either in adaptive immunity or mouse models of rheumatoid arthritis. As the project involves interactions with several groups, strong project management skills are required. The project would ideally suit an individual hoping to establish themselves within the field of inflammatory diseases.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no
more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous
academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A personal letter
  3. Contact details for two referees
  4. A complete list of publications
  5. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  6. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student
organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  7. Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is
scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system:http://ki.mynetworkglobal.com/what:job/jobID:31041/

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world´s leading medical universities. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education. Karolinska Institutet accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country´s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901 the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has
selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Pursuant to the regulations of the Swedish National Archives, applications are kept on file for two years after the appointment has gained legal force. The regulations do not apply to attachments that have been printed or otherwise published.

Karolinska Institutet strives to provide a workplace that has approximately the same number of women and men, is free of discrimination and offers equal opportunity to everyone.
