Postdoctoral studies in tumor angiogenesis (scholarship) : Stockholm, Sweden

The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics conducts multidisciplinary research in biomedicine and education within biochemistry and biophysics. Presently our department consists of 11 research divisions with a total of approximately 300 employees. The Division of Vascular Biology provides an international and interactive atmosphere with seven research groups (Christer Betsholtz, Ulf Eriksson, Jonas Fuxe, Johan Björkegren, Lars Jakobsson, Guillem Genové and Daniel Nyqvist) located within an environment hosting a broad repertoire of high-end equipment and technology

Assoc Prof Guillem Genové’s group
investigates molecular mechanism and cellular interactions that regulate pericyte recruitment and function. We study pericytes during pathophysiological conditions such as tumor growth, metastasis, and diabetic microvascular complications. We are a young, dynamic and very enthusiastic research team with a well-established collaborative network. The post-doctoral position is funded by the Breast Cancer theme centrum at Karolinska Institute (BRECT).

Duties
We are seeking a highly motivated researcher with a good team spirit and deep curiosity for science. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in animal physiology, cell signaling and molecular biology with a keen interest in vascular biology.

The project will be focused on studying pericytes in mouse models of breast cancer. We have recently established that pericytes regulate the recruitment of Myeloyd-derived suppressor cells to experimental malignancies such as melanoma or lung carcinoma (manuscript under revision). We plan to extend our observations to genetic mouse models of breast cancer (i.e. MMTV-PyMT). A key part of the project aims at elucidating the role of pericytes in limiting tumor dissemination, especially in brain metastasis (see Armulik, Genové et al, Nature, 2010).

Experience in working with mice, molecular biology techniques, confocal microscopy is a strong plus; and good ability to communicate in English (written and verbal) is required. Candidates will be encouraged to serve as mentors for exam students and co-mentors for Ph.D. students, thus building their experience for future leadership

Entry requirements
Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying.

One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Type of scholarship
Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within five years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt.

The amount is set for a maximum of six months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English:
1.Curriculum vitae and qualifications, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/meritportfolj )
2.A complete list of publications
3.A summary of current work (no more than one page)
4.Two letters of reference
5.Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
6.Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
