(ii) utilises protein engineering to develop and systematically test novel and potent biopharmaceutical complement inhibitors (immune modulators)

Your tasks:
- DNA preparations
- recombinant protein expression (using a fermenter) & purification
- biochemical and biophysical characterization of protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions
- immune functional assays (partly with material donated from patients of the University Clinic)
- cell culture, primary cell culture and cell characterisation techniques
- critical thinking

Your profile:
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious PhD candidate with a strong interest in innate immune functions and protein biochemistry.
A strong motivation to utilize basic research as a starting point for the development of new immunological applications is desirable.
We would welcome a candidate with excellent analytical qualifications, as well as profound organisation and communication skills.
Hands on experience (i.e. practical courses, internships) in some of the following fields are advantageous but not mandatory:
molecular biology (i.e. PCR, cloning), protein biochemistry (i.e. SDS-PAGE, western-blot, recombinant protein expression & purification),
biophysics (e.g. surface plasmon resonance) or cell biology (i.e. FACS). (Knowledge of German is not mandatory)

We offer:
- highly interesting and up to date research question
- membership in a motivated and young team
- payment according to TV-L (65% of pay scale E13; DFG-funded PhD-position for 3 years)
