Biologist Research Scientist : Berkeley, CA, United States

This Career Biologist Research Scientist position is part of the Mukhopadhyay group in the Physical Biosciences division of Berkeley Lab. The candidate will focus on the development of new strategies to examine signaling, fitness, stress response and metal homeostasis in environmental important bacteria. Microbes being studies are relevant to carbon sequestration, and to heavy metal and radiochemical material waste sites. This position is primarily in, but not limited to, the DOE ENIGMA SFA that focuses on organisms such as sulfate and metal reducers such as Desulfovibrio vulgaris, methanogens such as Methanococcus maripaludis, and Pseudomonads. The candidate will also manage the day-to-day research activities of this unit, including staff training and work lead responsibilities and may develop an independent research program.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Develop new, and optimize existing, molecular biology and genetic methods for use in targeted and high throughput examination of key microbial processes such as signal transduction, gene regulation, survival and fitness in model and non-model environmental organisms.
-Conduct a variety of molecular biology, growth and biochemical studies. Develop assays to examine fitness, signal sensing, and gene regulation in non-model soil organisms involved in key environmental processes such as elemental cycling, carbon sequestration and metal reduction (such as in cyanobacteria, e.g. Microcoleus vaginatus and sulfate/ metal reducers e.g. Desulfovibrios, Pseudomonads). Collect data from genome wide measurements at the transcript, protein and metabolite levels and from other targeted and untargeted biochemical and analytical workflows, to address the challenging but exciting goals of these projects.
-Provide oversight and direction for post-doctoral fellows, research associates and assistants with experimental design. -Have robust involvement in trouble shooting and other project related concerns.
-Compose manuscripts for peer reviewed publications.

Additional responsibilities:
-Compose reports, posters for the project.
-Participate in group meetings, steering committee meetings, project retreats and seminars.
-Maintain appropriate records and manage data.
-Collaborate and develop strong working relations with other researchers in the Mukhopadhyay group and develop long-term project planning.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
-At least 5-7 years experience post PhD in the research area described.
-Proven (via publications) and extensive experience in the study of non-model aerobic and anaerobic environmental bacteria such as cyanobacteria and sulfate reducing and methanogenic organisms.
-Demonstrated (via publications) experience with systems biology and the study of signal transduction, regulation, metabolism of a variety of microbial systems including sulfate and metal reducers, cyanobacteria and methanogens.
-Proven and extensive experience in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry.
-Demonstrated ability to guide and train support staff.
-Must have ability to handle multiple projects and tasks in parallel and meet programmatic milestones and project timelines.
-Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to accomplish goals as a team member.

Additional desired qualifications:
-Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in microbiology, chemistry or biochemistry or closely related discipline, or
-Experience developing strong working relationships and ability to creatively work within a team of scientists, with engineers, post doctoral researchers, graduate students and undergraduates from multiple backgrounds.
-Experience in analyzing and interpreting large biological datasets
