PhD-student position in Malignant Stem Cell Biology (m/f) (52074 Aachen)

The Department of Haematology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation and the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University Hospital Aachen offer a

PhD-student position in Malignant Stem Cell Biology (m/f)

available from August 1st 2014 (or later) for three years, with the option for extension.

Our research area comprises the pathogenesis of haematopoietic malignant diseases and has a strong focus on malignant stem cell biology in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). The disease-initiating stem cell population is responsible for therapy failure and/or resistance in MPN. The selected candidate will study the role of the STAT3 transcription factor in MPN stem cell survival and therapy resistance. Besides stem cell intrinsic mechanisms the candidate will focus on the influence of microenvironmental factors (stem cell niche) on STAT3 activation. During the accomplishment of this project the candidate will utilise a broad spectrum of techniques ranging from biochemistry, molecular biology and mouse genetics to state of the art imaging.

Applicants hold:
•       A diploma/masters degree in biochemistry, biology or related disciplines
•       Excellent track record with a strong background in biochemistry, tumor cell biology and molecular bi-ology
•       Great enthusiasm for oncology and signalling research, willingness to learn and self-motivation
•       Experience in cell culture, mouse genetics or microscopy (Confocal or 2-Photon microscopy) are highly advantageous but not required
•       Good English language skills and the ability to work in a team

We offer:
•       Excellent training to make use of a wide range of experimental techniques
•       State of the art facilities for mouse genetics, advanced microscopy, cell sorting and proteomics
•       Salary according to TV-L E13 (50%) plus benefits as common for public service position
•       Modern and well-equipped laboratories in a dynamic and international environment
