Post Doc-position in Neural Stem Cells and Developmental Biology (scholarship) : Stockholm, Sweden

The position is placed in the recently established research group of Dr. Fanie Barnabé-Heider, in the field Neural cells: development, biology and pathology at the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The focus of the lab is on the central nervous system stem cells both during development, adulthood and upon injuries and diseases (website: ki.se/en/neuro/barnabe-heider-laboratory). We have developed both in vitro and in vivo techniques and transgenic lines to study and uncover the mechanisms regulating endogenous stem cells. The FBH lab is also part of the Developmental Biology and Regenerative Medicine (DBRM, website: www.dbrm.se) center and the Stem Cell Club, which offer a wide range of seminars and collaborations.

Duties
The position is offered for a specific project on the stem cells of the developing cerebral cortex. Many severe neurological disorders occur if the embryonic development of the cerebral cortex is perturbed. However, very little is known on the role of stem cell proliferation in relation to neuronal layer specification and neural-glial cell fate decision. The lab is offering a combination of techniques including transgenic mouse models allowing specific tracing of neural stem cells and in utero electroporation for further genetic manipulations, and in vitro primary cell culture assays, in order for the post-doctoral fellow to pursue this study.

Entry requirements
The successful applicant has to hold a PhD degree and will have to demonstrate an in depth understanding of the field of Neuroscience and/or Developmental Neurobiology. The applicant should ideally have previous experience in rodent handling techniques, microsurgery and dissection, primary cell cultures, microscopy and molecular biology analysis techniques.

We are looking for a high achiever from universities worldwide as our lab offers a stimulating international environment. Specifically, the applicant should be a talented, efficient and team player person fluent in English. Moreover, the applicant should be innovative, eager to solve problem and learn new techniques. Priority will be given based on personal suitability in addition to technical and intellectual skills.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than 7 years before the last date of employment as postdoc, but priority will be given to applicants who have completed their PhD degree within 3 years. Postgraduates who have yet to obtain their PhD degree may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within a short time of the application deadline. Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education.

The position is available from September 2014 and will be paid by stipend for 2 years.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
  • Verification from the thesis defense committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defense is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)

The application is to be submitted in the MyNetwork recruitment system.
