Postdoctoral Fellow - Neuroscience and Blood Brain Barrier Transport : Basel , Switzerland

Postdoctoral Fellow – Neuroscience and Blood Brain Barrier Transport

Who we are

At Roche, 85,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare. Working together, we’ve become one of the world’s leading research-focused healthcare groups. Our success is built on innovation, curiosity and diversity.

The headquarters in Basel is one of Roche’s largest sites, over 8,000 people from approximately 80 countries work at Roche Basel. Favored by its geographic location in the heart of Europe, the Basel area is one of the most dynamic economic regions in Switzerland — a great place to live and work.

The Position

As a Roche Postdoctoral Fellow (RPF), the successful candidate will receive scientific mentoring from both Roche and its academic partner and gain valuable research experience from both academic and industrial perspectives. This is a postdoctoral position in the Neurodegeneration and Regeneration Section within the Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Diseases Department at Roche. The main area of focus is the biology of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and endogenous transporters to enhance delivery of therapeutics into the brain. The successful candidate will be involved in the identification, validation and application of novel BBB transport techniques ranging from cell and molecular biology through to ex-vivo and in-vivo models. The position will be based at Roche in Basel, Switzerland. In this position you will:

  • Perform cutting edge research in the following areas of neuroscience: molecular/cellular biology and protein biochemistry
  • Research effort aimed at identifying, validating and characterizing novel technologies for the transport of biologics across the BBB
  • Implementation of mammalian cell based assays and animal models to study mechanisms of transcytosis of biologics
  • Be responsible for experimental work, data analysis and detailed written records and notebooks
  • Be expected to publish the data in top tier journals, attend and present at international meetings and collaborate across groups in the research unit
  • The position is sponsored by the Roche Postdoctoral Fellowship Program and is initially limited to two years.

Who you are

You’re someone who wants to influence your own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies. Where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with a demonstrated track record in basic research and interested in pursuing an academic-style postdoc in an industry setting. Your further qualifications are:

  • Ph.D. degree (obtained no longer than 4 years ago) in protein biochemistry, neuroscience, neuroimmunology or a related field
  • Strong background in vascular biology, protein biochemistry, receptor mediated internalization or transport mechanisms at the BBB
  • Broad-based interest in the barriers of the CNS related to delivery of therapeutic agents to the brain is essential
  • Previous research experiences within the BBB field, familiarity with phage display technologies and experience with animal models of neurodegeneration or neuroinflammation are an advantage
  • A good publication record and excellent bench skills
  • Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work well within interdisciplinary research team

Applications must contain a CV with publication list and a motivation letter.
